CONTEMPORARY MINIATURES
Spaces In-Between
2020
This series of work draws attention to the recent lockdown and social distancing, looking at how nature fills the spaces we leave. When humans were forced to retreat, to pause, to quieten down, wild animals ran free on our roads, plants thrived without the pollution of our car engines, and birds flew free while we sat still in our cages watching the news.
Artist Statement : For a long time now I have been interested in the relationship between Humans and Nature, and how we think of ourselves as a separate entity. In my recent work I am impacted by the loss of forested land for human development and construction, the human centric goals we are setting in India, and the hope that there are better ways to rebuild our environment which includes protecting ourselves and the biodiversity we are blessed with.
Style : This is an ongoing series I am painting inspired by Mughal and Indian Miniature Paintings which historically often used nature as a central theme. I used elements and patterns from this ancient art form, and created a new style with surreal elements that blend the old world and the new. Traditionally Indian Miniatures are made using natural pigments, I have used watercolours on paper as i wanted the translucent effect. My next step is to learn the traditional form of the art in Jaipur.
